Amélie Rives, an American author, born in Richmond, Va.. She showed an early aptitude for writing, and a collection of her stories was published in 1888. The following year she created a marked sensation by her novel The Quick or the Dead? the intense emotionalism of which attracted much attention, and aroused conflicting criticism. Since then she has written a number of books including Tanis, a powerful story, and Herod and Mariamne, a drama in verse.
