Martha Marguerite, Marquis de Caylus, a French woman of fashion, one of the brilliant wits and social leaders of thecourt of Louis XIV.

Her famous Souvenirs with notes and a preface were edited in 1770 by Voltaire who regarded them as masterpieces of candor and wit; and Sainte-Beuve assigned her to a distinguished place in his Portraits of Celebrated Women.
