Sophia Jex-Blake, an English physician, born at Brighton. In 1869 she matriculated in medicine at the University of Edinburgh, and completed her medical education at the University of Bonn, receiving the degree of M.D. in 1877.

In 1886 she opened the Edinburgh School of Medicine for Women, of which she was dean until her retirement in 1899. She is the author of American Schools and Colleges, Medical Women and Care of Infants.
