Edith Matilda Thomas, an American poet and essayist, born at Chatham, Ohio. She began writing early for local newspapers, and first received encouragement in literary work from Helen Hunt Jackson.

Miss Thomas came to New York in 1888 where she became a frequent contributor of verse and prose to the periodicals. Her verse displays subtle feeling, delicacy of expression, and technical excellence.
