Emily Brönte, an English novelist. Her portrait is drawn by her sister Charlotte in Shirley.

She had great gifts both as a novelist and poet.

Having in mind, doubtless, her story Wuthering Heights (1847) and her poems, Mathew Arnold declared that for passion, vehemence, and grief, Emily Brönte had no equal since Byron.
