Giulia Grisi, a famous dramatic soprano, daughter of one of Napoleon’s Italian officers, born in Milan.
She came from a family musically gifted, and made her stage début in 1828.
In 1832 she appeared in Paris with great success, and from 1834 – 1849 she was the unquestioned prima donna of the Parisian and London operatic stage. She was a particularly fine actress, and in London her association with such singers as Lablanche and Mario was long remembered as the palmy days of Italian opera.
She married Mario, the tenor, with whom she visited America in 1854.
